Planar Installation Characteristics of Crown Depth-Variable Artificial Coral Reef on Improving Coastal Resilience: A 3D Large-Scale Experiment

چکیده

Coastal resilience has received significant attention for managing beach erosion issues. We introduced flexible artificial coral reef (ACR) structures to diminish coastal erosion, but planar installation effects should be considered evaluate the feasibility of coastline maintenance. In this study, we conducted a three-dimensional large-scale experiment investigate characteristics ACR, focusing on wave mitigation performance, profile deformation with delay, nearshore current movement, deposition and trends, variation. found that ACR diminished height by ~50% intensity ~60% compared conventional submerged breakwater made dolos units. Using dispersion velocity dye in tracer experiment, time was approximately 1.67-times longer than reduced, revealing significantly reduced structural erosion. With dolos, severe >10 cm occurred behind structure, whereas there only slight ACR. Moreover, vertical beach-profile analysis, exhibited greater shoreline accretion dolos. These results indicate potential improving resilience.

Herbivory, Connectivity, and Ecosystem Resilience: Response of a Coral Reef to a Large-Scale Perturbation

Coral reefs world-wide are threatened by escalating local and global impacts, and some impacted reefs have shifted from coral dominance to a state dominated by macroalgae. Therefore, there is a growing need to understand the processes that affect the capacity of these ecosystems to return to coral dominance following disturbances, including those that prevent the establishment of persistent sta...

Building coral reef resilience through assisted evolution.

The genetic enhancement of wild animals and plants for characteristics that benefit human populations has been practiced for thousands of years, resulting in impressive improvements in commercially valuable species. Despite these benefits, genetic manipulations are rarely considered for noncommercial purposes, such as conservation and restoration initiatives. Over the last century, humans have ...

Mass coral spawning: A natural large-scale nutrient addition experiment

A mass coral spawning event on the Heron Island reef flat in 2005 provided a unique opportunity to examine the response of a coral reef ecosystem to a large episodic nutrient addition. A post-major spawning phytoplankton bloom resulted in only a small drawdown of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP minimum 5 0.37 mmol L21), compared with almost complete removal of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (...

3D Visualization of Coral Reef Habitat

A bathymetric survey was recently conducted in Southeast Florida (Broward County) during April 2001 using the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) system. This four-meter resolution survey encompassed from North Dade County, through the length of Broward County coastline, to south Palm Beach County (approximately 43 km) and from the shore eastward to depths of approximately 40 m (2.5-3.5 km offs...
